A few weeks back I did a review of AIMES’ single “Every Time When I see You” and its B-side “Is A Good Friend.” And after those two tracks, I was pretty keen to get into the album Your Floor Is Now A Tree. Following on with the synth-pop/disco vibe, the LP is nothing like I expected it to be.
The opening track “Your Floor Is Now A Tree” grabs your attention and the gentle build up eases you into the unknown. What’s interesting about the project is the way it seamlessly switches from purely instrumental tracks to more ambient down tempo numbers. Tracks like “If You Ever Wanna” and “Living Like We Do” (probably my favorite track on the album) shine with lulling vocals. Mid-way through, the tempo picks up with “Hard Notes & Love Drugs,” which kinda makes me want to play Sonic The Hedgehog again. After that, the album drifts back into the more experimental zones. Half-way through “Wonder Stories,” there is a simple nature-inspired break that really propels the trippy side of the LP.
Everything about the album is unexpected. From the 70’s/80’s inspired synths to the nu-wave undertones throughout. Even the 50 minute length is a little peculiar. Your Floor Is Now A Tree may not be to everyone’s tastes, but if you like your music well thought-out, experimental and creative, I’d highly suggest it.
For me personally, this is a perfect example of a concept album. From start to finish, everything just works.
