Since it opened PUMA Social has been the place to go on a Friday night, and when they closed down for a quick Spring cleaning, more than a couple people were left wandering the mean streets of JHB for something to do. Now that the social club is open, the PUMA people are making it even more awesome for us. I think this is their apology for closing their doors on us.

Getting things going, PUMA have started the #GetMeIn competition:.

PUMA want to give loyal partygoers a chance to skip the queue and enjoy some drinks on them through the #GetMeIn competition. Tweet a theme-related photo with #PUMASocialJozi and #GetMeIn and the three best photos of the week will win Q-skipping rights and drinks vouchers for the evening.

To find out more about the #GetMeIn competition visit www.puma.com/social/news/getmein.

Next up:. Kings of Pong tournament.

a knockout PUMA Social Club table tennis tournament that will start on 5 July and run for 8 weeks. 16 teams will be able to participate in this grueling tournament, with each team consisting of 4 team members. Registration opens on 7 June, and it will work on a first come first serve basis, so register as soon as you can to avoid bitter disappointment. The winning team will receive R20 000 in prize money, so this one is not to be missed!

More details for this will be released soon!

The PUMA Creative Factory will also make its way to Jozi and will be at the social club on selected Friday nights. PUMA fans will have the chance to design and create their own shoe using the Basket and First Round styles as a base for their unique sneakers.

There is something for everyone at PUMA Social Club though – if you aren’t a lucky Q-skipping winner, there’s still a chance to win when you get inside. Pay the PUMA Social Claw a visit; there are lucky dips for gifts and vouchers ready to be won!

Get involved in the action on a Friday night. All you need to do is hit up the PUMA Social Club site and register there and your name will be put on a list at the door, or pay R20 when you arrive on the night.

Become a fan on Facebook or follow the happenings via twitter and use #PUMASocialJozi for any tweets about PUMA Social.

Check out the vibe for this Friday below:.

On glorious Friday afternoon I headed to the Zoo Lake Bowling Club to do an interview with Scottish indie band Suburban Saints. We drank beer, played bowls and I did this interview, check it out!

WHEN DID YOU REALISE YOU WANTED TO BE IN A BAND?

J: For me it would be the first time I ever heard guitar music, my dad and I went snowboarding and he made up a CD, and then I heard the Arctic Monkey’s first album and instantly realized that playing guitar was cool.

R: I got my first guitar when I was 13, I started playing and I just kept playing. I would listen to music and know that that’s what I wanted to do. When I was 12/13 my mom bought me a Led Zeppelin CD for Christmas and that was the first band I fell in love with. Being able to play guitar to that standard is what I wanted to do.

J: And now you’re the bassist.

C: I got my first guitar when I was 7 years old. I would have jams with my dad to The Beatles albums and I knew from then that this is what I wanted to do.

R: And now you’re the drummer.

D: I’ve played music since I was 5/6 years old. I started playing piano when I was 6, I also played violin and the saxophone. I didn’t pick up a guitar until I was 16, and now I’m the guitar player.

HOW DID YOUR BAND GET TOGETHER?

J: David and I were at school together and we met Chris and Rhys at college, we formed the band and from there we just seemed to click. We’re all on the same wave length when we write songs.

WHO ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?

SS: We’re influenced by classic rock like Led Zeppelin and AC/DC, but more recently, Arctic Monkeys, Biffy Clyro, Twin Atlantic (Scottish band) and The Strokes. We like energetic songs and basically anything indie.

WHO WRITES YOUR SONGS?

SS: We have an analogy for the way we write songs, we call it the Christmas Tree analogy: Jaime takes the tree down from the loft and sets it up, David puts the lights on, Chris throws on the tinsel and Rhys is the star on top.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE BIGGEST OBSTACLES FOR BANDS NOW DAYS?

SS: Distribution, There are a lot of really good bands out there that nobody has heard of. Its also who you know, its tough getting that first break. Not to bad mouth but how could Justin Bieber be number one? Never say never.

WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY TODAY IN REGARDS TO DOWNLOADS AND ALBUM SALES?

SS: It’s cutthroat. We love CDs, we’d rather buy CDs than download. There’s nothing better than having a CD. Bands don’t make enough money from selling songs, its playing gigs that you get the most money from. We’re not totally against piracy, if you download a song from a band and give it to 4 different people and they go out and buy the album than you’ve done nothing wrong.

BRITNEY SPEARS BACK IN THE DAY OR CHRISTINA AGUILERA?

D: Christina

C: Personally, Christina

R: Christina, after that Dirrty song she did

J: I’m going to be the odd one out and go for Britney Spears. Britney when she was bald.

WHERE’S THE WEIRDEST PLACE YOU’VE EVER PLAYED?

J: We’ve played gigs where we’ve been mismatched in genres, we supported a heavy metal band. We played a venue in Glasgow with a big whole in the stage. At one of our first gigs, there was barely anyone there and some drunk guy shouts from the bar “Who the hell are you?

R: “I’m Rhys,” I thought he was asking me personally.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ON YOUR SOUTH AFRICAN TOUR?

SS: The weather and meeting new people, there are a lot of nice people out here. We’re also looking forward to playing with the local bands here, like The Plastics and Ashtray Electric.

YOU RECENTLY RELEASED YOUR DEBUT EP ENTITLED ‘CAPITAL’, WHATS NEXT FOR SUBUBRAN SAINTS AFTER THIS TOUR?

SS: Its got to be the big ‘A’ word – Album. We’ve been writing for an album and we’ve got enough singles to release. However, the way we go about it is up in the air, whether we do it ourselves or go to someone.

Dear Reader are back with a brand new album titled Rivonia, and we are rather pumped for the release.

The album will be released through Sheer Sound on the 29th of April and is an in depth look into South Africa and our history.

“It must seem pretty odd to people that I made this record about South Africa in my apartment in Berlin. But I guess it took me moving away from home to see South Africa with fresh eyes. People I met here in Germany were asking me questions about my homeland that I couldn’t adequately answer, and this awareness of my own ignorance inspired me to read up about South African history. And then the things I read inspired me to write.” explains, Cheri MacNeil, the voice of DEAR READER.

The video for lead single Down Under, Mining is up on YouTube, and you can check it out below, plus have a look at the artwork for the album and the tracklisting:.

The last couple weeks have been an exciting time for the band Shortstraw, what with opening for The Kooks and releasing their new album. We had a quick chit chat with the guys about everything that has been happening, just to stay in the loop.

etm:. Firstly, massive congrats on walking away with “Best Indie” at the MK Awards this year. Did you guys each get a MK statue thingie or does the band have to share the one that was presented to you?

SS:.Ah thanks! It came as a total surprise to us, considering we were up against some of the biggest bands in the country, so it really means that much more than it normally would. So chuffed! We have one, really heavy, shiny award that sits in our practice room.

etm:.It’s been a couple days since the track “Good Morning, Sunshine” was put onto soundcloud, and already has just under 3000 plays. When you put a track up do you watch it nervously or check the stats every couple of days?

SS:. I think we all keep checking in every now and again to see how it’s doing on the first day it’s up, then it’s a nice treat to come back a few days later and see the plays piling up! Those of us with day jobs tend to look a bit more than the others, but that’s mainly because it beats working!

etm:.The new album is also called “Good Morning, Sunshine” – is it on the same vibe that we have come to know and love, or are you heading in a new direction?

SS:. It’s pretty much in the exact same vein as the our older stuff, but the music and songs have matured in how we’ve written them. They’re slightly smarter and there are way more intricacies in the instrumentation and production. We’ve matured as a band, but not necessarily as people.

We’re now a broke indie band, so hopefully we get a little bigger so we can pay off some debt!

etm:.I saw somewhere that the digital release will be April 22nd and a couple tracks will be up for download from the soundcloud page – a few people lost their minds thinking that it there will only be a digital release. So to clear the air, will there be physical copies of the album available?

SS:. There sure will! But because we’re so indie, it’s really difficult for us to get physical copies in major stores around the country, so we’re busy trying to figure out where we can stock the album for people to buy it. Our only real way of selling them will be at shows for the time being. But it’s convenient because we’re about to go on a countrywide tour! So you can download the tracks, get used to them and then commune get the real thing at a show!

etm:.With a new album, obviously comes the album tour and to kick off you guys have a pretty big show. Opening for The Kooks must be really exciting, but if I was up there I would probably be bricking it. Are you feeling some pressure for the gig?

SS:. To be honest, once we were up there, we turned any nerves we had into positive energy and just fed off the crowd. It was an incredible experience and one we’ll never forget. You just have to assume that no one wants you to fail, so they’re all on our side. Shit, what’s there to be afraid of?! And then just play the best show we’re capable of.

etm:. Straight after the JHB shows you are off to Cape Town for the album launch – Does this have anything to do with the bands romance with Matthew Mole?

SS:. Matthew Mole is currently living in Joburg with Al and Ollie, so yeah… we’re going to Cape Town to get away from him! Jokes aside, we love playing all around the country, and we want as many new people to hear this new album as possible as well, so it’s only natural to go to places like Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Grahamstown, Durban and all the others. It’s mostly the Mole though…

Our only real way of selling them will be at shows for the time being. But it’s convenient because we’re about to go on a countrywide tour!

etm:. Who are some of the bands that will be supporting you on the tour?

SS:. We’re so lucky to be playing with all our favourote bands along the way… The Lottery Tickets, Captain Stu, Al Bairre, Jakkals, Matthew Mole, King Dinosaur, Asleep in Transit, Anchors Up, The Anti Retro Vinyls, The Stella’s & Wrestlerish. Seriously, some of the best talent in the country.

etm:. The banner with the tour dates on Facebook got a number of interesting comments, mainly about Gad’s super t-shirt tan – did you guys just go out on a massive bender the night before the shoot, or do you all just look that amazing waking up?

SS:. Ha! Nah, we were styled by the uber talented Angie Batis and Carmen Life and wunderkind Hanro Havenga just knows how to photograph our best sides…

etm:. You’ve said in previous interviews that you guys aren’t a “big band”, but with everything that has been going on the last couple months, would you still consider the band a “small indie band”?

SS:. I think we’re growing, but are by no means a “big band”! And we’re still very much an indie band, based on the fact that we’re unsigned and just funded an album entirely by ourselves! We’re now a broke indie band, so hopefully we get a little bigger so we can pay off some debt!

Shortstraw are:.
